India ranks globally as third in net gain of average annual forest area between 2010 and 2020. They have prioritized biodiversity and conservation with an expanded network of protected areas.
China, the EU, the US, and India have together planted forests that could cover Bangladesh. Globally, forests can now absorb around 200 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, which is more than what is emitted through deforestation.
The research estimates that this could equate to around a third of the carbon humans have added to the atmosphere to date, potentially storing as much as 228 billion tonnes of carbon.
