🦟 Are we on the verge of defeating malaria?

One of this week's news stories is that Bangladesh is approaching zero deaths from malaria. We have written about malaria several times in the past year, as there have been many positive developments.

Better healthcare and mosquito nets have had a significant impact, but in the past year, new malaria vaccines have also been introduced and more are on the way. Millions are being vaccinated and tens of thousands of deaths have been avoided.

In the early 2000s, almost a million people died per year, which has decreased to about 600,000 today. The increase in recent years is mainly due to the pandemic making it difficult to work effectively against other diseases.

It is possible to eradicate malaria within ten years, believes Adrian Hill, a researcher at Oxford University.
