Notable increase in turtle nests

Researchers are celebrating a significant milestone in northern Palm Beach County. The Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach has documented a record-breaking number of sea turtle nests in the region.

The center reported 20,998 nests, breaking previous records for the 9.5-mile beach stretch. As of this writing this number has increased to 24,761 nests. In contrast, the number of nests last year stood at 18,132. The nesting season traditionally spans from March 1 through October 31.

“We are so excited to break this all-time nesting record and can’t wait to see if each sea turtle species breaks its individual record,” expressed Dr. Justin Perrault, the vice president of research at Loggerhead Marinelife Center.

Perrault attributes this significant increase in nests to consistent environmental protection efforts.

“Ocean conservation efforts that have been practiced for decades are finally showing results. It's crucial that we maintain our commitment to safeguarding these creatures and their habitats,” he emphasized.

Three endangered species

The Florida beaches are primarily known for the nesting of three sea turtle species: loggerheads, leatherbacks, and green turtles. Each of these species is currently listed as either endangered or threatened, which makes this record-breaking nesting season all the more vital and hopeful for their future.
