🔥 Electric cars catch fire less often than fossil fuel cars

Gasoline or diesel-powered cars are 19 times more likely to catch fire, argues the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), which has compiled the statistics for car fires in 2022.
In 2022, 24 electric or plug-in hybrid cars caught fire in Sweden, which accounts for approximately 0.004 percent of all electric and plug-in hybrid cars in Sweden. Of the entirely fossil fuel-driven cars, around 0.08 percent caught fire, writes TT.
The number of fires in electric cars has remained around 20 per year for the last three years, even though the number of electric cars has almost doubled to nearly 611,000, MSB points out.
"In this year's compilation, we have also included trucks and buses that are fully or partially electrically powered. When it comes to trucks and buses, the majority are still powered by diesel," says Ulf Bergholm, an officer at MSB in the department for learning from accidents.
The claim that electric cars are dangerous due to a high fire risk is often put forward by opponents of electric cars. We categorize this claim under naive pessimists.
