The latest edition from 2024 offers a comparison of global attitudes towards democracy during a time of increasing geopolitical tensions and violent conflicts. The results are based on nationally representative interviews with over 62,953 respondents in 53 countries.

85 percent believe that democracy is important, which is the highest level measured so far. Last year it was 84 percent, and the year the series began, 2019, it was 79 percent. The figure varies between countries, from 94 percent in Greece to 63 percent in Iran. Thus, democracy clearly has majority support in all surveyed countries.

Opinions on the state of democracy in one's own country

However, only 58 percent are satisfied with the state of democracy in their own country. 48 percent believe that their government primarily serves the interests of a minority. 40 percent think there is "too little democracy" in their country, but more – 46 percent – think there is "just enough democracy".
