Through a process that produces protein from air and electricity, Finnish Solar Foods can revolutionize the possibilities of food production in places where it was previously impossible.

Yes, you read right: air and electricity. This means that the protein powder Solein can even contribute to lower CO2 emissions through its production.

Last week I spoke with Solar Foods CEO, Dr. Pasi Vainikka . He has a long background as a researcher in renewable energy. It was under the great Finnish research initiative Neo-Carbon Energy that the idea for the company was born.

In the coming time, work is still mainly focused on pilot tests, EU applications and patents. But if all goes the way it's intended, the company hopes to have a product on the market in 2022.

In this case, the protein powder could be a welcome addition in, for example, plant-based meat, but the basic philosophy goes deeper than that: to release food production from agriculture.

β€œIn areas with a lot of sun, we could basically get a self-sufficient protein production in the middle of the desert. Here in the Nordic region, wind power could offer a similar opportunity, ”says Pasi Vainikka.
