💰 Funding to create an open energy protocol for energy sharing

Viable Cities is a project aimed at creating climate-neutral cities. Through this initiative, the municipality of Lund is receiving $2 million to implement 40 measures within mobility and energy. Project Energy Society is among these initiatives and will use part of the funding to develop an energy protocol.

An open standard

The internet runs on an open protocol, the internet protocol, IP. Just over a year ago, the Energy Engineering Task Force was established to develop an Energy Protocol, EP.

"The internet is a network of networks, with open standards that enable efficient and robust communication between independent nodes. I see the same possibility for local energy communities with local production like solar and wind, local storage like batteries and hydrogen, and also connected to new local networks for sharing," says Jonas Birgersson, who leads the energy society initiative.

Internetifying energy distribution

In the Energy Society Manifesto, the goal is to offer a low fixed cost for all the clean energy we need. Access to energy is a limiting factor for humanity. By creating an abundance of clean energy, we can reach the next level of civilization.

If we internetify energy distribution, we can store and then share energy with each other. This requires new software standards that are completely open and vendor-neutral. This is what the energy protocol aims to achieve.
