OpenAI launches educational version of ChatGPT in Estonia
In a collaboration, OpenAI will provide Estonia's government with ChatGPT Edu, a customized version of ChatGPT specifically developed for education systems. The initiative will begin with 10th and 11th grade students from September 2025, with the goal of later expanding to the entire high school system.
ChatGPT has become a popular tool for students worldwide. According to data from OpenAI, nearly four out of five ChatGPT users are under 35 years old, and the majority of conversations focus on learning and schoolwork.
Estonia's digital advantage
Estonia already has a strong position in AI usage. The country ranks among the top 15 globally for ChatGPT usage, with one active ChatGPT account for every four citizens. Data shows that Estonians primarily use ChatGPT for tutoring, teaching, computer programming, and writing.
This push is part of Estonia's AI Leap 2025 initiative, which aims to integrate AI capabilities into education. The initiative was launched by Estonia's president as a public-private sector collaboration and builds on the legacy of the Tiger Leap project from 1996, which computerized Estonian schools and laid the foundation for the country's emergence as a digital pioneer.
Practical applications for ChatGPT Edu
The collaboration includes technical support and knowledge-sharing for specific use cases. These can include custom GPT models focused on teaching and learning that save teachers time by removing administrative tasks from their workday, as well as supporting students to develop creativity and critical thinking.
Use cases include:
- Feedback and assessment
- Student support
- Study assistance
- Lesson planning
