From months to minutes with AI
The Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, known for manufacturing the diabetes and weight loss medicine Ozempic, has begun using AI to handle legally sensitive documents. According to tech site The Information, the company has managed to drastically reduce the time to compile regulatory documents - from 15 weeks to less than 10 minutes.
Despite the pharmaceutical industry generally being cautious about letting AI handle sensitive information due to the risk of errors, Novo Nordisk has taken the step to implement AI in its operations. Louise Lind Skov, who leads the company's technology strategy, explains that they have tested various AI models such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Meta's Llama for several years, but weren't completely satisfied with the results.
Claude 3.5 turned the development around
Since autumn 2023, however, Novo Nordisk has been using Anthropic's AI model Claude 3.5, which has proven to work significantly better. The AI model is now used to compile clinical study reports that are sent to authorities for drug approvals.
The AI-generated compilations are monitored and adjusted by human experts in real time. Processes that previously required more than 50 people and took several months can now be handled by only three people with AI support in just a few minutes.
Technology reduces error margins
To reduce the number of errors, Novo Nordisk has implemented so-called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), a method where AI reuses previously approved formulations.
Despite the increased efficiency, Novo Nordisk has not laid off any staff who work on compiling reports, but the company plans to hire fewer people in this area in the future. Instead, the savings have enabled more hiring in other departments within the company.
